Our winery is located in Deutschkreutz in Mittelburgenland. This is in the east of Austria on the border to Hungary. The winery itself is not in the centre of the town but in one of the side streets. Over the past few years the family business has been adapted step by step and now resembles something like a garage winery. 8 hectares of vineyards sprawl across some of the best vineyard sites in the region – from Hochberg to Steinriegel – which are considered to be real gems by wine lovers. This extraordinary terroir offers all of the natural conditions required for the production of unique wines.

The soil consists of heavy loam and clay resting on a limestone-rich sub layer. Hochberg and Goldberg are blessed with high sun exposure and a rather special soil structure which makes for an early ripening terroir. The naturally regulated water supply leads to the growth of particularly deep roots.

The vineyard sites Kart and Steinriegel are the complete opposite. Zweigelt, Cabernet Sauvignon, Welschriesling and Grüner Veltliner all flourish here in the north easterly plateau of Deutschkreutz, facing south.

The vineyards, with vines that are over 35 years old on average, are planted with 70% Blaufränkisch, 20% Zweigelt and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, Grüner Veltliner or Welschriesling. New vineyards will be planted in the near future. The grapes, particularly Blaufränkisch, ripen under perfect conditions each year.

A combination of factors is responsible for the outstanding and unrivalled quality of the wines produced at Ernst Winery: the unique terroir of the region, the age of the vines, our winemaking equipment and the philosophy that guides the management of the winery and the production process.
